Watermelons are the oldest crop ever grown by humans. Fields with this large berry were cultivated in Ancient Egypt, at the dawn of civilizations and eras. As now, then its flesh was bright red, pink or saturated raspberry. Only cultivated watermelons had tasty flesh, while wild specimens with a yellowish color were used at best for livestock feed.
In Russian summer cottages, classic red watermelon has been growing for a long time and quite successfully, but varieties whose yellow flesh have appeared relatively recently. What is a tribute to the fashion of returning to the roots or a new kind of GMO products? This is the question all gardeners ask themselves when they first see a color so unusual for a watermelon. Yellow watermelon - what is it
Externally, watermelons with yellow pulp are no different from the usual red ones. Their crust is also painted in green tones, has stripes or spots of a darker shade. The shape and size of watermelons with yellow flesh is also similar to the usual. However, and the color and aroma of their inner part, as well as their taste and sugar content, have some features.
The question of the origin of yellow watermelons was opened by breeders who created many varieties of this berry. Cultivated and wild species became his mother species. From the first they inherited sweetness and juiciness, from the second - the color of the flesh. Thus, suspicions about the use of GMO technologies with the introduction of the lemon or mango genome into them were finally debunked, and questions about why such a color appeared appeared less frequently.
Especially widely yellow watermelons were first grown in the Mediterranean countries and in Thailand. That is why Russian gardeners considered them unsuitable for cultivation in the middle lane, and even more so in the unstable climate of the Urals and Siberia. Features of yellow watermelons and their difference from red
What is the difference between yellow watermelons and red ones, and is there any point in wasting your time experimenting with this exotic? In fact, the differences between this subspecies of the berry from its classic counterpart are not so numerous:
- In a yellow watermelon there are fewer sugars, so it can be eaten without restrictions by diabetics and those who need to reduce its intake in the body.
- The juiciness and density of the pulp of the yellow watermelon practically does not differ from the red, but there is still less free juice (water) in it.
- Yellow watermelon leaves a longer watermelon finish.
- The crust on watermelons with yellow flesh is thin and dry, almost like a pumpkin or a melon.
- The pulp of the yellow watermelon contains almost no seeds, and at the time of ripening, they darken, but remain thin and soft, like young zucchini.
Some watermelons of this subspecies have a lemon-mango-pumpkin flavor, which is especially appreciated by gourmets. However, its composition remains the same as that of red: fiber, glucose and fructose, a mass of vitamins and minerals useful for the cardiovascular system, kidneys and endocrine glands.
Varieties of yellow watermelons
Many gardeners still do not know if there are yellow watermelons, or rather, their varieties suitable for cultivation in the middle zone, the Non-Black Earth Region and the southern regions. Fortunately, there are a lot of them. Breeders of the Czech Republic, Poland, Thailand, USA, Russia and Israel have created many very interesting varieties that successfully grow and bear fruit even in the suburbs.
Care and protection against pests and diseases
In order for yellow-fruited watermelons to work out well, it is recommended to grow them from the south side of buildings, where they will be protected from the sun. This culture, like the classic red berry, prefers sunny places with fertile and neutral soil. In order for the plants to grow strong and resistant to various problems, it is often important to feed them with organic matter: mullein, infusion of grass. It is recommended to feed watermelons with mineral fertilizers only after flowering. In this case, superphosphate and potassium salt are added to the already familiar organic top dressing.
To watermelons poured faster and not suffer from a lack of moisture, you need to water the plants at least twice a week, but very abundantly - literally pour melon into the melon (30-35 liters per sq. M).
When growing a watermelon with yellow flesh, melon growers run the risk of pest attack and disease. Most often, a culture suffers from:
- Overexposure - infection on the leaves, due to which they dry out and crumble, there are only petioles with streaks. The method of combating the disease is seed disinfection and treatment of plantings with Oxychoma.
- Anthracnose - An infection that affects all parts of the plant. When it goes to the root, the watermelon dies. You can deal with anthracnose by treating the plantings with a suspension of bleach or Bordeaux fluid.
- Melon black aphid - a pest sucking juices from a plant. You can fight it with folk remedies (fly ash and infusion of bitter herbs) or Inta-Vir or Aktara insecticides.
