The variety of indoor plants complements the many palm trees that can be seen not only within the premises, but also in the business area. The chamedorea belongs to the palm family, numbering more than a dozen species and varieties.

Botanical Description and Origin of Hamedorea

Hamedorea, or bamboo palm, is a monocotyledonous flowering plant, widespread in South and Central America. Under natural conditions, usually does not grow more than 2 m. Some varieties of undersized shrubs, due to their unpretentiousness, are cultivated as houseplants, turning the standard interior into a real oasis.

The trunk of the bushy palm is thin, so several plants are grown in the pot. Thanks to this technique, the effect of palm thickets is achieved, since long leaves (up to 40 cm) with wide segments have an openwork feathery shape. In a year, the plant produces 2 - 3 new leaves. In indoor culture, the height of adult bushes is limited to 1 - 1.5 m.

Unlike leaves, flowers do not represent any decoration. A palm tree blooms like a mimosa, and its flowering is not tied to a particular season. They can appear at any time.

Popular varieties of hamedorea

This flowering plant is not only distinguished by its beauty, but also by its benefits. It is able to clean the air of carbon dioxide and other unhealthy impurities. Scientists have found that negative substances absorb not only the leaves, but also the roots.

In the wild, there are more than 130 species of chamedorea, but only a few of them can be cultivated indoors.

Hamedorea Bridble

A modern, reputable variety. Breeding hybrid. Appearance is similar to graceful Hamedorea, but differs in the size of inflorescences, brightness and aroma of flowers. Since it is easy to care for, it is suitable for beginner gardeners.

Hamedorea elegans

It has stems similar to bamboo, feathery arcuate foliage of a light green color. The first red-orange or light yellow flowers appear at an early age, when the palm tree is 30 - 35 cm tall. Then small black berries appear.

Hamedorea Plain

It is one of the most hardy species that does not require serious care. It tolerates dry air and lack of sunlight. In appearance, it resembles an elegant chamedorea, but differs in the following ways:

  • much thin and long leaves;
  • elongated internodes.

When planted in wide dishes, it forms dense thickets. The flowers have a yellowish tint.

Hamedorea graceful

The most common type. Compact and easy to grow palm tree will decorate any interior. A dense rosette of leaves without a central stem, rising on thin and bare legs, is divided into lobules-feathers. The result is a surprisingly elegant structure with a sophisticated silhouette, suitable for a calm color scheme of interior design. The flowers of a light yellow palette have a pleasant aroma.

Hamedorea Ernest-Augustus

It has a single trunk with a small number of whole leaves bifurcated at the end. Since aerial roots form in the nodules of the stems, it propagates vegetatively. It blooms in red.

Hamedorea high

Shrub from the roots of which young trunks grow annually. The leaves of an arcuate shape are dark green in color, and the flowers collected in a panicle are bright orange.

Rules for transplanting a room palm after purchase

Experts do not recommend replanting chamedorea immediately after acquisition, because she needs to settle down in the new conditions. Any transplantation of a plant is a labor-intensive operation, therefore, without an essential need, it is better to refrain from transplanting. Difficulties usually arise due to volume crown or a high risk of damage to the root system, which is very sensitive to external interventions.

In the event that the container contains many densely planted plants, 2 weeks after purchase they can be divided into several groups. It should be borne in mind that for a young plant you need to choose a pot of large volume, otherwise the roots will quickly cover the entire mass of soil.

If you need to transplant a palm tree for the reason that you need to increase the size of the container, it is recommended to use the transshipment method: remove the plant along with the soil, carefully shake off excess soil. Place drainage material at the bottom of a new flower pot, and then put a root ball and fill it with new soil mixture containing mineral substances. Thus, the soil will have a structure suitable for a room palm.

Conditions of detention

When acquiring Hamedorea, it is important to consider that its homeland has a climate different from Russian regions. In order to ensure the active development of the plant, it is necessary to create conditions that are as close as possible to natural conditions.

Choosing a place in the house

Having decided to plant a tropical beauty at home, it is recommended to choose a place for her, protected from direct sunlight. This can be a section enclosed by a light curtain at the north or east window. Even if placed in a place with low light, the palm tree will be able to adapt, because in nature it grows in mountain forests under a canopy of trees.

Under the hot rays of the sun, the tips of the leaves may burn, therefore, it is not recommended to take the plant to the balcony or export it to the cottage under the open sky in the summer. Although the palm tree can easily tolerate a dry climate, for better growth it is necessary to spray it regularly, maintaining a comfortable humidity.

Young bushes can be grown in terrariums, both in the living room and in the office, filling with them the gaps between the furniture. You can add originality by planting a palm tree with other plants.

Humidity and lighting

The most important indicator in caring for a tropical beauty is humidity. Since chamedorrhea prefers moist air, spraying should be done regularly. Experts allow the refusal of this procedure only if it is cool in the room where the palm tree grows. But even in cold weather it is necessary to spray the bushif the room is dry air.

The water used is necessarily pure and settled. Whenever possible, it is best to collect rainwater. Near the pot with a palm tree, it is recommended to install a container of water or purchase a humidifier.

It is a mistake to assume that chamedorrhea is a heat and light-loving plant, because in nature it is illuminated by diffused light. Large palm can be placed in the corner opposite the window opening. This place is beneficial in that the rays will not burn the leaves. In the summer, shading is required from 10 to 17 hours. In order for the leaves to grow in all directions, it is necessary to turn the container with the plant around its axis.

In order to avoid illness or death of the bush, it is necessary to monitor the temperature of the soil. In winter, it should not be lower than 16 ° C, and in summer not rise above 27 ° C. Otherwise, the horse system will begin to languish, which will affect the entire plant.

Ground and plant pot requirements

For proper care of a room palm tree, planting in fertile soil is necessary, the acidity of which should be in the range of pH from 6 to 6.5. The substrate can be purchased at the store or made on its own. The composition of the soil for self-preparation:

  • 20% peat;
  • 20% of leaf land;
  • 50% of turf land;
  • 10% sifted quartz sand.

When preparing the ground, it is important to consider that it requires sterilization by either of two methods: freezing or calcination. Why is this necessary? In order to avoid infection by diseases or pests. If soil is purchased at a store, it should be mixed with sieved sand, which should not exceed 10%.

When transplanting a plant, the diameter of the new pot should be several cm larger than the size of the previous one. Since the root system mainly grows in length, it is better to give preference to a deep and not wide container, on the bottom of which 3-4 cm of drainage are placed (pebbles, gravel, expanded clay balls), which must first be disinfected by boiling.

Caring for chamedorea at home

The interest of interior designers in tropical guests is due to relatively modest conditions of detention. Although care for chamedorrhea is simple, but thorough. The plant grows slowly, especially sprouted from seeds, therefore it frees the host from frequent transplantation. The most popular varieties include elegant chamedorea and bridble. The rules for palm care are almost the same.

Watering a houseplant

The frequency of watering a home palm tree depends on the ambient temperature and the time of year. From mid-spring to late autumn, chamedorrhea is actively growing, therefore, requires frequent watering. In this case, the soil must have time to dry out. In winter, the substrate dries longer, so you can water less often. The development of some types of palm trees is not affected even by limited watering, but other individuals cannot tolerate the drying of the soil. But all varieties of chamedorea react negatively to waterlogging: foliage wilts and eventually decays and dies. After establishing conditions, the plant is successfully restored.

Feeding

During the growing season (from spring to autumn), the plant needs to be fed twice a month. The necessary preparations for palm crops can be purchased at a specialized store. In autumn and winter, chamedorrhea is at rest, so it does not require additional nutrition.

Regular and competent fertilizing affects the appearance of the palm, growth and flowering.

Purpose and technology of cutting

For proper care of chamedorea, pruning is required. This procedure is mandatory, with which damaged or dry leaves are removed. Necessary tools and materials that will be required for the manipulation:

  • gardening scissors;
  • isopropyl alcohol.

In order to protect the plant from the introduction of fungal or bacterial infections, the first thing to do is wipe the secateurs with alcohol. Next, remove lifeless, brown and other damaged leaves.

Important! In order to avoid infection with various infections, pruning sites must be treated with fungicides.

Plant diseases and their treatment

Often, flower growers panic when a healthy palm suddenly changes color and leaves dry. In this case, it is not tedious to worry, but it is important not to confuse the natural process with the onset of the disease.

Description of the main diseases of room palm and control measures:

  • Young leaves slightly curl down. Not a sign of illness. It is recommended that watering be limited a little so that the topsoil dries out a little.
  • The tips of the leaves turn black and dry. Unsuitable conditions (burns or frostbite). It is required to fence the plant from direct sunlight or from other adverse factors.
  • Insects appeared in the ground. The main reason is waterlogging of the soil. After normalizing watering, insects will disappear.
  • Leaves in the basal area are covered with black dots and dry. A disease arising from waterlogging, which leads to rotting of the root system. The plant cannot be saved.
  • The appearance of a smell of dampness from a flower pot indicates improper transplantation and damage to the rhizome. It is necessary to normalize watering with the addition of Cyclron (4 drops per 1 liter of water). With the same solution, you need to spray the plant once a week for a month.
  • A white coating formed on the inside of the leaves, and the plant itself became covered with white dots. It is necessary to take measures to combat the spider mite with the help of Akarin or Fitoverm preparations. The affected bush should be isolated from healthy plants.

When controlling pests, it is recommended to process not only the plant, but also the windowsill or the place where the flower pot is located, as well as the pot itself. To reduce the pest population, you need to rinse the palm with a warm water solution with the addition of laundry soap.

Flower propagation methods

There are several ways to propagate hamedorea:

  • seeds. The main disadvantages include a long period of seed germination (from 3 to 8 months).
  • dividing the bush. It occurs by planting plants grown from germinated seeds in different pots.
  • basal processes (vegetative). The technology is similar to the bush dividing method. It doesn’t take much time.
    Each planting option has its advantages and disadvantages, so flower lovers choose the right one.

Palm trees are among the most popular indoor plants, as they provide an atmosphere of tropical splendor. However, they do not require serious care. The list of possible species that can survive indoors increases if you use a greenhouse for cultivation. But even in small-sized apartments, you can put a small chamedorea or another small palm tree (mini-mix).
