Technology for planting potatoes in the combs

Planting potatoes in the combs is one of the most effective and popular ways to grow a popular vegetable crop on heavy soils. The comb technology of cultivating potatoes in household plots is often called Dutch gardeners and not only improves soil aeration, but also ensures good quality of work to care for the vegetable crop.

Method technology

Seed potatoes must be pre-planted in the form of treatment with preventive and stimulating solutions, as well as landscaping and germination. High-quality seed should have strong green shoots, a length of not more than 1.5-2 cm. For preplant treatment of potato tubers, it is advisable to use the drug "Celest-top" at a dose of 0.4 l / t. It is possible to carry out treatment with a contact fungicidal preparation of prophylactic action "Maksim" to protect against a wide range of diseases, including rhizoctonia, silver scab, fusarium and fomosis.

Landing is carried out after warming up the soil to 8-10 ° C at a depth of half a bayonet bayonet. Also, the timing of planting is determined by the readiness of the soil for quality processing. Immediately before planting seed tubers, a relatively deep digging of the soil to the depth of the arable layer is necessary. If the site is being prepared in the fall, then you can make manure, humus or compost. Tubers grown on well-fertilized soil have optimal culinary qualities and are better preserved during the winter period.

After digging, even furrows should be made, the depth of which should not exceed 8-10 cm.The standard distance between rows of planted potatoes should be 65-70 cm. Organic or mineral fertilizers can be added to the prepared furrows before planting seed potatoes and sprinkled with fertile soil, 2-3 cm high. In this case, the depth of the furrows should be about 5 cm greater. It is also recommended to use the Quadris preparation when planting more than 3 l / ha, which will protect the potato from rhizoctoniosis in the soil.

Germinated and processed potato tubers are laid in the furrows at a distance of 25-30 cm from each other and are sprinkled with soil on both sides, which allows you to form a relatively high comb. Standard indicators of the height and width of the ridge are approximately 10x20 cm. Such ridges will be the best protection for tubers in late spring frosts.

It should be noted that for the correct formation of a tuber nest above the bottom of the aisles, seed potatoes are buried by 6-8 cm, given the distance from the top of the ridge to the surface of the planting material. The average density of planting potatoes by this method is about 60 thousand seed tubers per 1 ha.

Advantages and disadvantages

The advantages of growing potatoes in household plots with the comb method are for the most part obvious:

  • in winter, at such sections in the aisles there is better snow retention;
  • in the spring, the ridges on the plot warm up as quickly as possible, which allows you to start earlier sowing;
  • minimized losses of planting material as a result of the negative impact of late spring frosts;
  • For a long time, optimal moisture indicators are maintained and the soil compaction coefficient on the site decreases;
  • improved aeration, or breathability, of the soil, which is necessary for the development of a powerful root system of plants;
  • there is no need to carry out multiple hilling of plants throughout the growing season;
  • the location of the ridges changes annually, alternating with row spacing, which reduces the risk of rapid depletion of the soil.

In addition, labor costs are reduced due to the absence of the most difficult planting stage in the form of annual digging of the soil and arrangement of planting holes. Harvesting is also greatly simplified and accelerated. Productivity of marketable tubers is increased by about 15-20% compared to growing potatoes in a standard way.

Care Tips

Basic care for planting potatoes by comb technology is maximally simplified and consists in the following activities:

  • systematic destruction of weeds with a wide hoe in the direction from bottom to top, to the apical part of the ridges, which, in addition to weeding, allows restoration of ridges destroyed by heavy rainfall;
  • in too dry season, with a lack of natural moisture, potato planting is irrigated between rows;
  • To protect against diseases and pests, standard preventive spraying of plants several times per season is used.

Harvesting is done after yellowing the tops. To accelerate the ripening of potato tubers, you can mow potato tops.

Reviews gardeners

Very often, new potato cultivation methods are criticized and quickly forgotten. However, the comb method of planting potatoes for many years has been used in many regions of our country. The feedback of gardeners about this method is very contradictory, which is not always due to the correct implementation of the technology for growing vegetable crops.

You cannot form ridges with a triangle, as a result of seedlings direct their growth to the right or left, which significantly contributes to the improper formation of plants, complicates care, and also negatively affects the quantity and quality of the crop. The result of proper planting is the formation of rows with ridges parallel to each other, so moisture is more efficiently and evenly distributed in the soil, protects potato tubers from overheating, drying out or overcooling.

Gardeners who have been using the ridge method for many years have noted that the presence of inter-furrow space, which is limited by ridges, contributes to a significant relief of root irrigation. Water enters the plants from the inter-row space, so the soil crust does not form above the plants.

In addition, harvesting is very easy, and potato tubers are located in the upper part of the ridges and are not damaged by a pitchfork or shovel during harvesting. Thus, it is possible to obtain the highest quality and marketable crop, which is perfectly preserved throughout the winter period.
